Can I get an MRI with a tattoo?

Almost always yes - tattoos rarely interfere with MRI, but tell the team. The FDA has reports of swelling or burning over tattooed skin during scans, occurring only rarely and apparently without lasting effects, plus rare image-quality interference from metallic pigments. Report any warmth or tingling over a tattoo during the scan immediately; the technologist can stop and adjust.
What to do
- Declare every tattoo. Include permanent makeup and microblading - ink is ink to the magnet.
- Speak up about warmth instantly. Heat over a tattoo during the scan means stop and cool, not push through.
- Ask about a cold compress. Many centers place one over tattooed skin as a precaution.
- Never skip a needed MRI over a tattoo. Rare, minor, transient effects do not outweigh a needed diagnosis.
