Can you drink alcohol while taking Afamitresgene Autoleucel Injection?
Last updated September 7, 2026.
Alcohol has no known direct interaction with afamitresgene autoleucel, but you should not drink around the time of treatment. This is a one-time engineered T-cell infusion given after lymphodepleting chemotherapy with fludarabine and cyclophosphamide, and alcohol adds to the nausea, dehydration, and fatigue those drugs cause. In the weeks after infusion you may also be watched for cytokine release syndrome and for confusion, drowsiness, or trouble speaking, and alcohol makes those harder to spot and harder to judge. Many people are also taking steroids, tocilizumab, antiseizure medicine, or antibiotics during this window, and drinking on top of them is not a good idea. Your team checks liver and blood counts closely, and heavy drinking can push those numbers in the wrong direction. Ask your oncology team for a specific date when drinking is reasonable again, since it depends on your counts, your other medicines, and how recovery is going.
What to do
- Pause during treatment: Do not drink during lymphodepleting chemotherapy or in the first weeks after infusion while your team is monitoring you.
- Ask for a date: Get a specific restart point from your oncology team rather than guessing, since it depends on your blood counts and liver labs.
- Watch the other medicines: Skip alcohol while taking steroids, tocilizumab, antiseizure medicine, antinausea drugs, or opioid pain medicine.
- Protect your judgment: You are told not to drive for several weeks after this therapy, and alcohol makes new confusion or drowsiness much harder to recognize.
- Stay hydrated instead: Water, broth, and electrolyte drinks help far more than alcohol when you are dealing with nausea and fatigue.
- Call promptly: Report fever, confusion, trouble speaking, severe weakness, or vomiting that stops you from drinking fluids to your team right away.
