ER or urgent care: how do I choose?

Last updated September 3, 2026.

One question settles it: could this kill or permanently harm in the next hours? ER for the life-and-limb list - chest pain, stroke signs, breathing trouble, severe bleeding, poisoning, serious injury, infant fever under 3 months. Urgent care for the painful-but-stable middle: sprains, stable fevers, stitches-not-gushing cuts, ear infections, UTIs, rashes, mild flares. Practical notes: urgent care is far cheaper and faster - the ER triages sickest-first; a phone call describing symptoms gets you routed; and no wrong-door penalty exists for choosing reasonably - urgent care stabilizes and transfers when it is worse than it looked.
