How accurate are home UTI test strips?

Useful as a first screen - the strips check urine for nitrites and white blood cells, the footprints most UTIs leave. Positive strip plus classic symptoms: call the doctor. But a negative strip does not fully clear you - some bacteria make no nitrites and dilute urine washes the signal out - and the strip cannot identify the bacteria or the right antibiotic, which is what the lab culture answers.
What to do
- Test first-morning urine. The most concentrated sample gives the clearest read.
- Act on positive plus symptoms. Call the same day - treatment or a confirming culture follows.
- Do not let a negative strip overrule real symptoms. Burning, urgency, and frequency persisting mean a call anyway.
- Skip the strip for red flags. Fever, back pain, pregnancy, or recent antibiotics: direct to the doctor.
