How do I know if I have anxiety or just stress?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
Stress has a cause and fades with it; an anxiety disorder persists, grows out of proportion, and starts interfering with daily life. NIMH describes the pattern: symptoms that disrupt job performance, schoolwork, and relationships, with avoidance of ordinary situations in severe cases. The tells are persistence after the trigger passes, worry out of proportion, physical symptoms without clear cause, and a sense the worry runs you.
What to do
- Watch the duration. Worry that outlasts the problem by weeks is pointing somewhere.
- Watch the avoidance. Skipping ordinary situations because of fear is a disorder pattern, not a stress pattern.
- Get a real evaluation. A clinician distinguishes stress, anxiety, and lookalikes like thyroid problems - treatment works well.
- Use 988 for crisis moments. Thoughts of self-harm: call or text 988 in the US, or your local crisis line, any time.
