How do I prevent altitude sickness?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
Ascend slowly: acclimatize 2-3 nights around 8,000-9,000 feet, then raise sleeping altitude no more than 1,600 feet per day. No alcohol and mild exercise for the first 48 hours.
What to do
- Stage your ascent - 2-3 nights at 8,000-9,000 ft before going higher, per CDC guidance.
- Watch sleeping altitude - above 9,000 ft, gain no more than about 1,600 ft per night.
- Baby the first 48 hours - no alcohol, mild exercise only, keep your normal caffeine.
- Ask about acetazolamide if you must ascend abruptly - and descend if symptoms worsen.
