How long am I contagious with COVID?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
COVID spreads starting about 2 days before symptoms and is most contagious early. CDC guidance: stay home while sick, return after 24 hours of improving symptoms and no fever without medication, then take 5 days of added precautions. The old fixed 5-day isolation is gone; the current rule is symptom-based. Meeting the return bar means you are typically less contagious, not non-contagious, so the following 5 days come with masking, cleaner air, distance, hygiene, and testing around high-risk contacts. Immunocompromised people can shed virus far longer and need individualized guidance. On testing: one negative rapid test does not prove you are clear, though two negatives 48 hours apart are stronger evidence. Prioritize protecting high-risk contacts (elderly, pregnant, immunocompromised) for the full precaution window. If symptoms rebound after you resume activities, stay home again and restart the clock.
What to do
- Stay home while symptomatic: especially the early days, when spread peaks.
- Return rule: 24 hours improving plus fever-free without medication.
- Then 5 days of precautions: mask, distance, clean air.
- Testing helps: two negatives 48 hours apart before seeing high-risk people.
- Rebound = stay home again: restart the clock if fever returns.
