Anorectal manometry usually takes about 30 minutes, and the whole clinic visit is typically under an hour. The recording itself is short because the catheter is already in place while you squeeze, relax, and push on cue. Add-on parts such as a balloon expulsion test or rectal sensation testing can stretch the appointment by 10 to 15 minutes, and biofeedback planning afterward adds a few more. Prep is usually one or two enemas a few hours before, which is the part most people underestimate when planning their day. No sedation is used, so there is no recovery time and you can drive yourself home. If you have a spinal cord injury, a rectal stricture, or recent anal surgery, tell the team in advance, since the setup may take longer.
What to do
- Block off two hours: The recording is short, but check-in, prep, and instructions fill out the visit.
- Do the prep exactly: Use the enema at the time your clinic specifies, since stool in the rectum can force a repeat test.
- Ask about your medicines: Laxatives, opioids, and some muscle relaxants can change pressure readings, so confirm what to hold.
- Skip the driver: There is no sedation, so you do not need someone to take you home.
- Expect pressure, not pain: Tell the technician right away if anything hurts, since the catheter can be repositioned.
- Call your clinician if: You have ongoing bleeding, fever, or severe rectal pain after the test, or your symptoms change while waiting on results.
