How often do you need a tetanus shot?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
The CDC says adults need a tetanus booster every 10 years, because protection fades with time. The childhood DTaP series and preteen Tdap set the base; after that it is Tdap or Td per decade. Wounds move the clock: for deep or dirty wounds, a booster is given if the last dose was more than 5 years ago. If you cannot date your last shot, check your GP record, a vaccine registry, or pharmacy records, and when in doubt, boost, since an extra dose is safe. The shot is cheap and stocked at GP offices and pharmacies.
What to do
- Mark your decade date; boosters are every 10 years.
- Expect an earlier booster for deep or dirty wounds past 5 years.
- Check your GP, registry, or pharmacy if you do not know your last dose.
- When in doubt, get the booster; extra doses are safe.
