Is colonoscopy prep really that bad?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
One unpleasant day, not days of misery - a clear-liquid diet, a laxative prep, and hours near the bathroom. The prep exists for a hard reason: leftover stool hides polyps and can force a repeat. Modern split-dose preps - half the evening before, half the morning of - work better and feel easier than the old all-at-once version. The procedure itself, by comparison, is a sedated nap.
What to do
- Chill it and use a straw. Cold prep solution goes down easier; some add allowed flavor packets.
- Camp near the bathroom. Once it starts working, it works - plan an evening with no obligations.
- Protect your skin. Soft wipes and barrier cream prevent the soreness frequent trips cause.
- Finish the full prep. Stopping early is how people end up repeating the whole thing.
