Is my child's rash contagious?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
It depends on the cause - chickenpox and hand-foot-mouth spread, eczema and contact rashes do not. Purple non-blanching spots with fever, breathing trouble, or a hard-to-wake child mean urgent care now.
What to do
- Note the company it keeps - fever and a sick-looking child suggest infection; itching alone suggests hives or contact.
- Press a glass to it - spots that do not fade under pressure plus fever need urgent care.
- Check the timeline - new foods, medications, or illnesses in the days before it appeared.
- Keep contagious rashes home - chickenpox until all spots crust over, roughly 7 days.
