Pneumonia itself does not pass person to person like a cold - but many of the germs that cause it do. The CDC traces pneumococcal bacteria to direct contact with respiratory secretions like saliva or mucus, and flu and COVID viruses spread through ordinary respiratory routes. Whether exposure becomes pneumonia depends on your age, immune system, and underlying conditions - the same germ that gives one person a sniffle gives an 80-year-old pneumonia.
What to do
- Treat a household case like any respiratory illness. Handwashing, no shared utensils, and mask consideration for close caregiving.
- Shield the vulnerable. Infants, older adults, and the immunocompromised get the careful distance.
- Use the vaccines. Pneumococcal, flu, and COVID shots all prevent pneumonia, directly or indirectly.
- Watch yourself after exposure. Fever, cough, or breathing trouble in the days after: get evaluated early.
