What does blood in my vomit mean?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
Vomiting blood is always a same-day problem - ulcers, stomach irritation from alcohol or NSAIDs, or tears from retching are the common causes. Large amounts, dizziness, or black stool mean the ER now.
What to do
- Get seen today - red blood or coffee-ground material both count.
- Go to the ER for the heavy pattern - ongoing bleeding, dizziness, racing heart, clammy skin.
- Mention alcohol and NSAID use - both are leading, treatable causes.
- Check your stool too - black and tarry plus vomiting blood means significant bleeding.
