What does it mean if I lost my sense of smell?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
Usually a cold, sinus infection, or COVID, and smell returns within weeks. Smell gone past a month, or fading gradually for no clear reason in an older adult, deserves an ENT or doctor visit.
What to do
- Wait out a cold - smell usually returns in two to three weeks.
- Test for COVID if smell vanished without congestion.
- See an ENT after a month - polyps and other fixable causes need a look, per NIDCD.
- Check smoke detectors and food dates - smell is your spoilage and smoke alarm.
