What is Amisulpride Injection used for?

**In the United States, amisulpride injection (brand name Barhemsys) is approved to prevent and to treat nausea and vomiting after surgery.** The answer depends on which product you mean: the US injection is an anti-nausea medicine, while amisulpride tablets sold in Europe and other regions are an antipsychotic used for schizophrenia. The injection is given into a vein over 1 to 2 minutes by an anesthesia clinician, using 5 mg at the start of surgery to prevent nausea or 10 mg to treat vomiting that starts afterward. Because amisulpride can lengthen the QT interval, tell your team about heart rhythm problems, low potassium or magnesium, and any other medicines you take that affect the QT. The side effects reported most often are chills, low blood pressure, and a rise in the hormone prolactin. If nausea after surgery keeps you from drinking fluids or lasts more than a day at home, contact your surgical team.
What to do
- Know the setting: This drug is given by a clinician through an IV around the time of surgery, not taken at home.
- Separate it from the tablets: Oral amisulpride is an antipsychotic used outside the US, and it is not what the US injection treats.
- Share your heart history: Tell the anesthesia team about long QT syndrome, slow heart rate, low potassium or magnesium, or other QT-prolonging medicines.
- Report past surgery nausea: If you were sick after previous anesthesia, say so beforehand so a prevention plan is in place.
- Expect one dose: Repeat dosing has not been shown to add benefit, so ask about a different anti-nausea drug if symptoms continue.
- Call for lasting vomiting: Vomiting that stops you from keeping fluids down after you go home needs a same-day call to your surgical team.
