What is cognitive behavioral therapy?

Last updated September 3, 2026.

CBT is the most-studied talk therapy: a structured, short-term method that identifies self-defeating thought and behavior patterns and trains new ones. NIMH describes it as changing those patterns directly. The engine: thoughts drive feelings drive actions, and CBT breaks the loop by testing thoughts against evidence and rebuilding behavior in small steps. It is time-limited - weeks to months - with between-session practice doing much of the work, it works virtually, and it pairs well with medication.
