What is performance anxiety in bed?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
Arousal hijacked by self-monitoring: attention flips from sensation to evaluation, fear triggers adrenaline, adrenaline suppresses the sexual response - producing the failure feared, then dreading the next time. That loop is why situational ED - works alone, fails with a partner - is usually anxiety, not anatomy. The tells: sudden onset after a specific event, normal function in low-stakes contexts, a busy inner commentator. What breaks it: temporarily taking intercourse off the table (sensate focus), saying it aloud to the partner, sleep, alcohol limits, and therapy for persistent cases.
What to do
- Name it to your partner. The secret is fuel; saying it defuses it.
- Take the goal off the table. Touch without a performance target retrains attention.
- Cut alcohol as a crutch. It disinhibits and impairs at once.
- Get therapy for the persistent loop. Short-term and effective. In crisis: 988 in the US, or your local crisis line.
