What is the difference between a therapist and a psychiatrist?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who diagnoses and prescribes. A therapist provides talk therapy and usually cannot prescribe. Many people use both - pills from one, weekly work with the other.
What to do
- See a psychiatrist for medication questions - or a primary care or telehealth clinician for common ones.
- See a therapist for the weekly work - CBT and other structured talk treatments.
- Combine them when both fit - NIMH notes medication plus therapy is a common, effective pair.
- Check the license - LCSW, LPC, LMFT, PhD, and PsyD are therapist credentials; MD or DO means medical doctor.
