Why do I clear my throat all the time?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
Chronic throat clearing is usually silent reflux or post-nasal drip feeding a self-irritating loop - sip or swallow instead of clearing, treat the trigger. Hoarseness past 2-3 weeks or one-sided pain: get examined.
What to do
- Swap clearing for sipping or a swallow - breaking the loop is half the fix.
- Treat the reflux pattern - earlier dinners, less coffee and alcohol, raised bed head.
- Treat the drip pattern - allergies and congestion drive coating.
- Hoarseness past 2-3 weeks or one-sided pain: ENT - persistent one-sided symptoms get looked at.
