Why do I get heartburn at night?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
Lying flat plus late, large, fatty meals lets acid wash upward. Last meal 2-3 hours before bed, head of bed raised, left-side sleeping - and twice-weekly night heartburn is GERD territory worth treating.
What to do
- Finish eating 2-3 hours before bed - a full stomach plus lying flat is the setup.
- Raise the bed head six inches - wedge or blocks, not stacked pillows.
- Sleep on your left side - anatomy keeps acid down, per NIDDK.
- Treat frequent nights as GERD - twice weekly or more deserves medical care.
