Why do I get swollen feet during pregnancy?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
Pregnancy foot swelling is fluid plus vein pressure - gradual, both-sided, better overnight. Sudden face and hand swelling with headache or vision changes, or one swollen painful leg: same-day call.
What to do
- Elevate and left-side rest - unload the veins, per NHS guidance.
- Keep ankles moving - calf pumps and walking push fluid back.
- Compression socks for standing days - and supportive shoes.
- Same-day for sudden or one-sided swelling - face and hands, headache, vision changes.
