Why do my muscles ache two days after a workout?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
DOMS peaks 24-72 hours after new or eccentric exercise and fades within a week - normal adaptation. Move lightly, sleep, hydrate. Sharp localized pain with swelling, or dark urine after extreme exertion, needs a doctor.
What to do
- Keep moving lightly - walking and easy cycling speed recovery over total rest.
- Progress loads gradually - new exercises and eccentric work trigger DOMS hardest.
- Sleep and eat normally - repair runs on rest and protein.
- Doctor for sharp localized pain or dark urine - injury and rhabdo are not DOMS.
