Why does my hip hurt when I sleep on my side?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
Outer-hip pain lying on your side is usually trochanteric bursitis or gluteal tendon irritation. Pillow between knees, mattress topper, and hip strengthening fix most cases; pain past a few weeks or after a fall needs an exam.
What to do
- Pillow between the knees - keeps the top leg from dragging the hip inward.
- Soften the mattress - a topper reduces point pressure on the bursa.
- Strengthen the hip stabilizers - weak glutes are the usual root cause, per AAOS.
- Get persistent pain examined - past a few weeks, after a fall, or with a hot swollen joint.
