Why is my blood pressure high only at the doctor?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
High only at the doctor is usually white coat effect - settle it with a 7-day home protocol: validated cuff, seated rest, morning and evening pairs. High at home too is real hypertension.
What to do
- Run the 7-day home protocol - two readings, morning and evening, average after day one.
- Technique is the test - back supported, feet flat, arm at heart level, per NHLBI.
- Below 135/85 at home: white coat pattern - watched, usually not treated.
- High at home too: real hypertension - and normal office plus high home is masked, also real.
