Why is my toddler's fever not coming down?

Last updated September 3, 2026.

Fever medicine lowers the temperature a degree or two - it does not switch it off, and the NHS notes a child's fever usually lasts 3 to 4 days: the return after each dose is the illness, not a failing medicine. Watch the child, not the number: drinking, responding, normal color matter more than 38 versus 39. The override flags: any fever of 38C or more under 3 months old (always urgent), a rash that does not fade under a pressed glass, breathing difficulty, floppy unresponsiveness, a seizure, dehydration signs, or fever past 4 or 5 days.
