Eye floaters are small specks, threads, or cobwebs drifting across your vision: shadows cast on the retina by clumps in the eye's vitreous gel, most noticeable against bright backgrounds like sky and screens. They are overwhelmingly a benign byproduct of the vitreous aging and shrinking, and most people learn to ignore them. The emergency version is the sudden shower: a burst of many new floaters with flashes, which can signal a retinal tear.
What do they look like?
Drifting shapes that move when your eye moves (and lag slightly, then settle): dots, threads, blobs, cobwebs, or a large ring (the classic Weiss ring of posterior vitreous detachment). They are sharpest against uniform bright backgrounds, they never sit still, and you cannot look straight at them (they dart away with the eye). The normal course: new floaters announce themselves annoyingly, then fade from attention over months as the brain learns to cancel them and they sink out of the visual axis. A sudden shower of many floaters, or flashes of light (like lightning arcs in the edge of vision), is a different event.
Why do they happen?
The vitreous (the gel filling the eye) liquefies and shrinks with age, its collagen fibers clumping into the shadows you see; eventually it peels away from the retina (posterior vitreous detachment: the common, benign event behind most new floaters, happening to most people eventually). Short-sighted people get there earlier. The danger version: as the vitreous peels, it occasionally tears the retina, and a torn retina can detach: which is why new floater bursts get a same-week dilated eye examination. Surgery, injury, inflammation, and diabetic eye disease cause their own kinds.
What actually helps?
- Time and the brain: the main treatment for ordinary floaters is none: most fade from attention over months as the brain filters them out, and chasing them (eye gymnastics, supplements) does nothing.
- The urgent-check habit: any sudden increase, flashes, or a shadow at the edge: the dilated retinal check, promptly.
- Practical workarounds: moving the eyes up and down (rather than side to side) shifts the gel; sunglasses and screen adjustments cut the contrast that shows them.

Common questions
When exactly are floaters an emergency?
The four alarms, all same-day: a sudden shower or swarm (many new floaters arriving at once, not one more thread), new flashes of light (arcs or lightning at the edge of vision, especially persisting), a shadow or curtain spreading across any part of the field (the detaching retina itself), and any sudden drop in vision. The physiology: the aging vitreous gel peels off the retina (common and benign), but in a minority it tears the retina as it goes, and a tear leaks fluid behind the retina, which detaches over days, and detachment untreated costs sight. The same-week rule is the minimum; same-day is the standard the eye units actually work to. Your chronic, stable, drifting specks are not this.
Will my floaters ever go away?
They fade rather than leave, through two mechanisms: some sink out of the central visual axis (gravity slowly parks them low, out of the picture), and, more powerfully, the brain learns to cancel them (the same neuroadaptation that ignores your nose in your vision), so within months most people stop noticing floaters that are technically still there. The ones that persist in awareness are usually the large, central, or numerous kind. The honest expectation for new ordinary floaters: annoying now, background by the season after next. Is there any treatment that actually removes them?

Why am I getting them? Am I too young?
Floaters are the vitreous aging, and the schedule varies: the gel starts liquefying and clumping from middle age onward (most people notice their first in their 40s-60s), but the early arrivals are explained: short-sighted (myopic) eyes develop them years to decades sooner (the longer eye stretches the gel), eye surgery (cataract surgery especially) accelerates the change, injuries and inflammation add their own, and diabetics get their own version. Young people with occasional small floaters are common and usually benign; the rule that overrides age entirely is the sudden shower or flashes, which earn the dilated check at 20 as at 70. Can screen time or eye strain cause floaters?
No: screens and eye strain do not create floaters (the floaters are physical clumps in the gel, formed by age and the eye's structure, not by looking at things), but screens reveal them: the bright uniform background of a white document or a pale sky is exactly the contrast that makes existing floaters visible, which is why people notice them at the computer and blame the computer. The genuinely screen-related complaints (strain, dryness, headache) are real but separate problems with their own fixes (the 20-20-20 rule, blinking, screen height).
