Is screen time permanently damaging my eyes?
The evidence is reassuring on the specific fear: screen use causes discomfort (the strain you feel: dry, tired, aching eyes) but has not been shown to cause permanent damage to adult eyes or vision: the burning and blur are fatigue and dryness, not injury, and they recover with rest. The genuine caveats: children (where heavy near-work associates with rising short-sightedness, and outdoor time is protective), and the sleep effect (late bright screens disrupt sleep: a different mechanism). Do blue-light glasses help?
The honest evidence: the trials to date do not show blue-light-filtering lenses reducing eye-strain symptoms (the strain comes from reduced blinking and sustained focus, not the blue light), and blue light from screens at ordinary levels has not been shown to damage the retina. Where blue light genuinely matters: the evening (bright screens late do suppress melatonin and delay sleep: the night-mode settings and the screen curfew address that directly). The discriminating list, because most tired eyes are just tired: persistent blurring that does not clear with rest (strain blurs fluctuate; the fixed kind gets the eye test sooner), a red, painful eye (inflammation and acute pressure problems, not strain), double vision (never a strain symptom: prompt assessment), headaches that are new, worsening, or morning-patterned (not the end-of-day frontal ache), floaters showering or flashes, and any one-eye asymmetry (one eye doing all the complaining).
