In short Check your insurance first Choose a primary care doctor Move your records Move your prescriptions Know where to go when you are sick Book a first visit Common questions SourcesAfter a move, check whether your insurance still works where you live, then pick a primary care doctor in your plan's network and move your records and prescriptions. Moving also can open a Special Enrollment Period if you buy coverage on the Marketplace.
Check your insurance first
Some plans are tied to a region. Call the number on your card and ask whether your plan covers your new address. HealthCare.gov says a permanent move to a new area can qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period, generally with a 60-day window, so act quickly if you need to change plans.
Choose a primary care doctor
Search your insurer's directory for in-network doctors near you, then call to confirm they are accepting new patients and still take your plan. See our guide on finding a primary care doctor. If you do not have insurance, see seeing a doctor without insurance and community health centers.
Move your records
Ask your old providers to send records to the new office, or request copies yourself. See how to get medical records. Ask for immunization records and recent lab results.
Move your prescriptions
Ask your new pharmacy to transfer prescriptions from your old one. See how to transfer a prescription. If you will run out soon, see what to do if you run out.
Know where to go when you are sick
Before you need it, note the closest urgent care and ER. See urgent care vs the ER and getting a same-day appointment.
Book a first visit
A first visit lets the new doctor know your history. Bring a medicine list and questions. See how to prepare for a doctor visit.
