In short

Without vision insurance you can still pay less by getting your exam first, asking for your prescription, and comparing prices. Medicare.gov says Original Medicare generally does not cover eye exams for glasses.

Start with the exam

An eye exam checks vision and eye health, and the result is your prescription. See our guide on eye exam cost without insurance. Federally funded health centers may offer eye care, see community health centers.

Get a copy of your prescription

In the U.S., eye doctors must give you a copy of your eyeglass prescription after an exam and you do not have to buy glasses from them. Ask for it so you can shop around. Contact lens prescriptions have their own rules, and the FTC explains them below.

Compare prices

Compare the same lens type and coatings at several places. Online sellers, warehouse stores and independent optical shops can differ a lot. Ask what is included, such as coatings and a warranty.

Contacts

You need a valid prescription for contacts. Ask about the brand, size of box and any trial or rebate. Never wear contacts that cause pain or redness, see pink eye care.

Medicare and public coverage

See what Original Medicare does not cover. Medicaid vision benefits for adults vary by state.

When to get urgent care

Sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, or an injury to the eye needs urgent care or the ER.

Common questions

Can I use my prescription anywhere?

For eyeglasses, you generally can. Eye doctors must give you a copy, and the FTC explains the rule.

Does Medicare cover glasses?

Original Medicare generally does not cover eye exams for glasses or the glasses themselves.

Is an eye exam cheaper at a health center?

Possibly. Federally funded health centers charge based on income and some offer eye care.
