Can you catch up on sleep on weekends?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
Partly - weekend recovery sleep lifts the acute fog, but it does not undo the metabolic and attention costs of a short week. And the big sleep-in shifts your clock later, producing Sunday-night insomnia and Monday misery - social jet lag. The better design: hold the weekday floor as high as possible, cap the weekend sleep-in at about an hour, and use a short early-afternoon nap for top-ups. If weekends are the only reason you function, the schedule - not the weekend - is the lever.
What to do
- Cap the sleep-in at an hour. Enough to recover, not enough to shift the clock.
- Nap strategically. 20 to 30 minutes, early afternoon - not the 3-hour coma.
- Raise the weekday floor. The CDC calls under 7 hours insufficient; fix the week, not the weekend.
- Watch the Sunday-night tell. If you cannot sleep Sunday, your weekend schedule is the cause.
