What is Sunday scaries anxiety?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
The Sunday scaries are anticipatory anxiety - the brain fast-forwarding to Monday and running threat simulations. In dose, nearly universal and mostly benign: a Friday shutdown ritual (list next week's first tasks), keeping Sunday evening for something genuinely good, and steady weekend sleep shrink it. When dread starts Saturday, wrecks every Sunday, or comes with physical symptoms, it is saying something specific: the job is a real mismatch, or your baseline anxiety has grown teeth. NIMH's line applies - persistent, excessive, interfering worry is the disorder side.
What to do
- Close the week on Friday. Ten minutes listing Monday's first tasks kills the blank-page dread.
- Protect Sunday evening. Plan something good; do not pre-live Monday.
- Hold the sleep schedule. Weekend sleep-ins feed Sunday insomnia, which feeds the dread.
- Read the loud version honestly. Weekly misery points at the job or at baseline anxiety - both are worth naming. In crisis: 988 in the US, or your local crisis line.
