Yes - and for several STIs, silent is the default: the CDC notes most genital herpes and HPV infections produce no noticed symptoms, most chlamydia is asymptomatic, and HIV runs for years without signs after a brief early phase. Asymptomatic does not mean harmless or non-contagious: silent infections transmit and silent damage accumulates - untreated chlamydia still causes pelvic inflammatory disease. That is the whole argument for routine testing: symptoms cannot be your detection system when the commonest infections produce none.
What to do
- Test by schedule, not by symptom. The common infections are the silent ones.
- Ask for the right sites. Throat and rectal swabs if oral or anal sex is part of your life.
- Treat a new partner as a testing event. Both of you, before going condom-free.
- Never wait for a sign. There may never be one - that is the point.
