How long does a panic attack last?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
Minutes, not hours - NIMH puts the range at a few minutes to an hour. The wave surges fast, peaks within about ten minutes, and subsides because the body cannot sustain that alarm state; the aftermath - exhaustion and dread of the next one - is what lingers. Knowing the time limit is itself a treatment tool: slow breathing plus the reminder that it peaks and passes.
What to do
- Ride the wave with slow breathing. Long exhales tell the body the alarm is false.
- Anchor to the clock. The peak passes in minutes - saying so out loud works.
- Get recurring attacks treated. Repeated attacks plus dread of the next is panic disorder, and it responds well to therapy.
- Respect the wrong-pattern signs. Chest pain, fainting, or no rise-and-fall shape: medical evaluation. In crisis: 988 in the US, or your local crisis line.
