Is scabies contagious?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
Yes - scabies spreads by direct, prolonged skin-to-skin contact, per the CDC: households, sexual partners, nursing homes. A handshake will not do it, but weeks can pass between infestation and symptoms, so people share it unknowingly. The rule that prevents the boomerang: everyone in the household and all close contacts treat at the same time, plus hot-wash or bag bedding and clothing. Itching persisting weeks after treatment is the allergy fading, not failure.
What to do
- Treat the whole circle at once. Household and close contacts together, symptoms or not.
- Apply the cream as directed. Permethrin covers the body as instructed - shortcuts cause failures.
- Handle the linens. Hot-wash or bag bedding and clothing from the days before treatment.
- Expect the itch to outlast the mites. Weeks of fading itch is normal; new burrows are not.
