Is cellulitis contagious?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
No - cellulitis cannot pass between people. It is a bacterial infection of the deeper skin layers, from bacteria entering through a break in your own skin. The spreading that matters is internal: untreated, it can reach the bloodstream, per the CDC - so a red area growing fast, fever, or chills is urgent, and antibiotics are the treatment. No quarantine needed; just mark the border, elevate, and finish the full course.
What to do
- Mark the edge. A pen line around the redness shows objectively whether it is advancing.
- Elevate the limb. Elevation above heart level drains swelling and speeds recovery.
- Finish the antibiotics. The full course, even after the skin looks better.
- Escalate fast spread or fever. Rapidly advancing redness or fever and chills: same-day urgent care.
