What are the signs of autism in adults?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
The CDC frames autism around two clusters: problems with social communication and interaction, and restricted or repetitive behaviors or interests. In adults that can look like missing subtext, exhausting small talk, deep narrow interests, distress when routines break, and sensory sensitivities. The patterns trace back to childhood even when masked - many adults camouflage for years - and a formal assessment separates autism from its lookalikes.
What to do
- Look for the lifelong thread. Autism starts in childhood; adult-onset social difficulty points elsewhere.
- Note masking. Many adults hide traits by scripting and imitation - exhaustion after socializing is often the tell.
- Seek an adult-experienced evaluator. Adult autism assessment is a specialty; ask directly about experience with adults.
- Treat assessment as information. A diagnosis can unlock accommodations, community, and self-understanding even late in life.
