Why do I procrastinate everything?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
Procrastination is emotion management, not laziness: the task triggers discomfort - boredom, fear of failing, overwhelm - and avoidance relieves it instantly, which trains the loop to repeat. That is why willpower fails and tomorrow always looks easier. The fix targets the emotion and the first step: shrink the start until it is nearly frictionless, and skip the self-criticism, which reliably produces more avoidance.
What to do
- Shrink the first step. Open the document, write one bad sentence - starting is the hard part, not continuing.
- Name the discomfort. Bored, scared of failing, unsure where to begin - each has its own counter.
- Drop the self-criticism. Beating yourself up after procrastinating predicts more procrastination, not less.
- Screen the pattern. Lifelong, everywhere, with chronic lateness and half-finished projects despite effort: worth an ADHD evaluation.
