What causes mesothelioma?
Last updated September 6, 2026.
Mesothelioma is caused almost entirely by breathing in or swallowing asbestos fibers, usually from work or from fibers brought into the home. Asbestos was used for decades in insulation, shipbuilding, construction, roofing, brake and clutch parts, and demolition work, so the highest risk sits with people who handled those materials before modern controls. Family members were exposed too when fibers came home on work clothes, hair, and tools. The disease usually shows up decades after the exposure, which is why a job you left in your twenties still matters to your doctor. Undisturbed asbestos in a building is not the same as loose fibers in the air, so leave old insulation, floor tile, and siding alone and hire a trained abatement contractor for removal. Smoking does not cause mesothelioma by itself, though quitting still lowers your risk of other lung disease.
What to do
- Write down your work history: List every job, year, and task that involved insulation, pipes, boilers, brakes, or building demolition, and give that list to your doctor.
- Leave old materials alone: Asbestos that is sealed and undamaged is safest left in place, so do not sand, drill, saw, or scrape suspect insulation, tile, or siding.
- Hire trained removal: Use a licensed asbestos abatement contractor for repairs or renovation in older buildings instead of doing the work yourself.
- Keep fibers out of the house: If you work around asbestos, change and shower on site so you are not carrying fibers home on clothes, shoes, or tools.
- Stop smoking: Smoking does not cause mesothelioma, but it multiplies asbestos-related lung cancer risk, so quitting matters most for people with past exposure.
- Get symptoms checked: See a clinician for chest or belly pain, shortness of breath, a cough that will not settle, or unexplained weight loss, especially with an exposure history.
