What does it mean if I hear my heartbeat in my ear?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
Pulse-synced whooshing is pulsatile tinnitus - often blood pressure, anemia, or congestion, but new one-sided whooshing should always be checked promptly, not watched for months.
What to do
- Check your blood pressure - high BP is a common, fixable cause.
- Note which ear and when - one-sided and persistent means get seen promptly.
- Mention related symptoms - fatigue (anemia), weight loss and racing heart (thyroid).
- Expect a vessel listen and maybe imaging - that is how causes get sorted, per NIDCD.
