What does it mean if my voice is hoarse?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
Usually laryngitis, voice overuse, or reflux - clears in 1-2 weeks with voice rest. Hoarseness past two weeks, especially in smokers, needs an ENT look; with swallowing or breathing trouble, sooner.
What to do
- Rest your voice - but do not whisper - soft normal speech strains less, per NIDCD.
- Hydrate and skip throat clearing - both calm swollen cords.
- Suspect silent reflux - morning hoarseness plus heartburn is the tell.
- Two weeks is the line - persistent hoarseness gets a cord exam.
