What is a patient portal and how do I use it?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
The health system's secure front door - MyChart is the commonest brand: notes, results, refills, scheduling, billing, and secure messaging with your care team, all replacing phone-tag. Activate at the front desk or by online identity verification; one portal per system, so multiple portals are normal. The paying tips: notifications on; messaging for non-urgent questions (documented, and lands in your record); read after-visit summaries; download your data when leaving a system. The caution: portal messages are medical-record entries handled in working hours - urgent symptoms are a call or the ER, never a message.
What to do
- Activate once, at any visit. The front desk hands you the code.
- Turn on notifications. Results and messages surface themselves.
- Message instead of phone-tag. Documented, and it lands in the record.
- Never message urgent symptoms. Call or go in - portals run on office hours.
