When can my kid return to sports after a concussion?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
After symptoms resolve and a supervised 6-step progression is completed symptom-free - never the same day as the injury. Each step takes at least a day, so expect roughly a week or more.
What to do
- Enforce the same-day rule - suspected concussion means out of play immediately.
- Follow the CDC 6-step progression - advance only when no new symptoms appear.
- Get school right first - full class days usually come before full sport.
- Get written clearance - many leagues require it, especially for repeat concussions.
