Why do I get anemia after pregnancy?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
Postpartum anemia is depleted iron plus delivery blood loss - exhaustion that does not lift deserves hemoglobin and ferritin tests. Breathlessness at rest, chest pain, or fainting: prompt assessment.
What to do
- Ask for hemoglobin and ferritin - and thyroid at the same draw, since they travel together.
- Take iron with vitamin C - away from tea, coffee, and calcium, per NHLBI guidance.
- Finish the course - stores refill last, over months.
- Breathless at rest or fainting: prompt call - that is not wait-and-see anemia.
