Why does my shoulder click?
Last updated September 3, 2026.
A painless click is usually a tendon gliding over bone: normal noise, no fix needed. The shoulder trades stability for mobility, so it pops and clicks more than other joints. The NHS symptom guide says clicking or locking combined with pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness suggests instability or impingement and is worth assessment, while severe pain in both shoulders, fever, or pain after an injury warrants urgent help. Pain worse when lifting the arm is the classic impingement pattern. Most painful clicking shoulders improve with relative rest and targeted strengthening from a physio.
What to do
- Ignore clicks that do not hurt; they are normal joint sounds.
- Note the pattern: pain when lifting, weakness, or a slipping feeling changes the answer.
- Rest the provoking movement and use simple painkillers for a painful click.
- Get urgent help for severe pain in both shoulders, fever, or pain after a fall or injury.
