Knowing the line makes it much more useful. Here is what to use it for and when to go straight to a person.
What it is good at
Understanding a symptom at 2am without a search rabbit hole. Working out whether something needs the ER, urgent care tomorrow, or rest at home. Making sense of a lab result or a medication question. Getting a list of what to ask your clinician. Keeping your history in one place so each conversation starts where the last one ended.
What it cannot do
It cannot see you, listen to your chest, or feel your abdomen. It cannot order a blood test or an X-ray. It cannot write prescriptions. It cannot make a formal diagnosis. Those depend on a licensed clinician with the ability to examine you and the legal authority to order care.
When it is unsure, the right answer is to tell you that and point you to the right level of care.
When to skip it and get help now
Call 911 or go to the ER for chest pain or pressure, trouble breathing, signs of stroke (face drooping, weakness on one side, slurred speech), a sudden severe headache, heavy bleeding, fainting, a severe allergic reaction, or thoughts of harming yourself. In the US, you can call or text 988 for a mental health crisis. Do not wait for a chat reply.
Using it well
Be specific. Say when it started, how it has changed, what you have tried, your medications, and anything that makes it better or worse. Share the care note with your own clinician, since it summarizes the conversation in a form they can use.
Pymander's AI doctor is free to text, with no app and no account, and is available any time.
Common questions
What can an AI doctor do?
It can discuss symptoms, explain what a pattern most likely means, help you decide how urgent it is, explain lab results and medications in plain language, and help you prepare questions for a clinician.
What can't an AI doctor do?
It cannot physically examine you, order lab tests or imaging, prescribe medication, or make a formal diagnosis. Those require a licensed clinician.
Can an AI doctor tell me if I need the ER?
It can help you decide, and a well-built one will tell you to seek emergency care for danger signs. If you think it is an emergency, call 911 or go to the ER without waiting for a reply.
Can an AI doctor read my lab results?
It can explain what a result means and which ones are worth asking your clinician about. It cannot replace your clinician's interpretation in the context of your full history.
Is texting an AI doctor private?
Pymander states that messages are encrypted and under your control, with HIPAA-aligned safeguards. Read the privacy policy of any service before sharing health details.
