Dupilumab: what it treats, how to use it, side effects
Last updated September 3, 2026.
Dupilumab is a monoclonal antibody - it blocks the signals that drive allergic-type inflammation. You may know it as Dupixent. A self-injection on a schedule, prescribed and monitored by specialists - never by Pymander.
What does it treat?
Eczema - atopic dermatitis; asthma; chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps; and related conditions like eosinophilic esophagitis, prurigo nodularis, and chronic hives.
How do you use it?
Subcutaneous - under the skin - on the schedule your specialist sets, often every other week, with the first doses supervised. Training first for home use; the device warms per its instructions - never heated. Rotate sites; into the sharps container after. Never stop without the specialist. Missed dose: inject as soon as you remember, then reset with your care team.
Side effects to know
- Common: injection-site redness or pain; sore throat, runny nose, cough, or fever; mouth or lip sores; toothache; trouble sleeping; dizziness; diarrhea; muscle pain; headache.
- Serious - call your doctor immediately: new or worsening eye problems - eye pain, blurred vision, pink or red eyes, red or swollen eyelids, vision changes; rash, shortness of breath, fever, chest pain, brown or dark urine, pins and needles, or numbness in arms or legs; new or worsening joint pain; new or worsening skin problems; and the allergic set - swelling of face, eyelids, tongue, or throat, swollen lymph nodes, trouble swallowing or breathing, chest or throat tightness, rapid heartbeat, fainting, dizziness.
Who should not use it?
Flag eye problems, shingles or other herpes infections, and worm infections - hookworm, roundworm, whipworm, threadworm - those get treated first. On it for a skin or nasal condition and you also have asthma? Both belong on the table. Vaccines need the specialist's timing. If you become pregnant, call your doctor.
When is it an emergency?
Trouble breathing, face or throat swelling, chest pain, or fainting is a 911 call. For a dosing error, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. Pymander's escalation routing is built and tested specifically for this class of decision; see the safety architecture working paper.

Common questions
What is the eye warning about?
The known quirk: new or worsening eye problems - pain, blurred vision, pink or red eyes, swollen eyelids, vision changes - are the call-immediately set on this drug. Conjunctivitis is the common version and responds to treatment; the rule is reporting fast, not watching at home. An eye history goes on the table before starting, and some patients get a baseline eye exam.
Why did my doctor ask about worms?
Specific and real: hookworm, roundworm, whipworm, and threadworm infections get treated before starting - the drug quiets the immune arm that keeps them in check. Travel history to regions where these are common belongs in the conversation. It is one of the more unusual screening questions in medicine and entirely practical.
Does it suppress my whole immune system?
Different target: dupilumab blocks specific allergic-inflammation signals rather than turning down immunity broadly - the infection profile differs from the older immunosuppressants. The watch items are its own: eyes, the herpes family, and the allergic-reaction set. Vaccines still go through the specialist - the rule survives every nuance.
Why are the first doses supervised?
Allergic reactions - rare but real: swelling of face or throat, chest tightness, rapid heartbeat, fainting - can follow an injection, and the supervised starts are the safety net while your response is mapped. Home dosing begins when the care team is confident. Any reaction signs after any dose - even months in - are the immediate call.
Can it treat my asthma and my eczema at once?
Often, yes: the drug blocks signals shared across allergic-type conditions - eczema, asthma, nasal polyps, and related diagnoses. One injection schedule can serve two conditions. The coordination matters: every condition you carry belongs on the table, because dosing and the watch list follow the full picture.
What happens if I miss a dose of dupilumab?
Inject as soon as you remember, then reset the schedule with your care team - never double up. The every-other-week anchor - same day, calendar-marked - keeps gaps rare. Travel rule: the medication rides cold in a cooler pack, never frozen, never left in a hot car.
