Oseltamivir is a flu antiviral - a neuraminidase inhibitor that stops the flu virus from spreading in the body. You may know it as Tamiflu. It shortens flu, and it has a hard clock: it works when started within 2 days of symptoms.
What does it treat?
Influenza in adults, children, and infants older than 2 weeks who have had symptoms no longer than 2 days - it shortens how long the fever, aches, cough, sore throat, and exhaustion last. It is also used to prevent flu in people 1 year and older after close contact or during an outbreak. It does not prevent bacterial complications of flu, and it does not replace the yearly flu vaccine.
How do you take it?
For treatment: twice a day, morning and evening, for 5 days - adults take 75 mg per dose. For prevention: once a day for at least 10 days, or up to 6 weeks during a community outbreak. With or without food, though food or milk softens the stomach upset. The 48-hour rule comes from the label: treatment is for people symptomatic no more than 48 hours, so the call to the doctor happens on day one, not day four. Who should not take it?
Flag immune-system conditions like HIV and AIDS, and heart, lung, or kidney disease - the label cuts the dose for kidney impairment. If you have fructose intolerance, the suspension contains sorbitol. Why do they say Tamiflu only works in the first 48 hours?
That is the studied window. The label limits treatment to people symptomatic no more than 48 hours - the virus replicates explosively early, and oseltamivir works by stopping its spread.
