In short

Coffee is not off-limits with Adderall: the FDA label does not list caffeine as an interaction, but keep it modest and ask your prescriber what is right for you. Both are stimulants, and their side effects overlap: fast or pounding heartbeat, nervousness, and trouble sleeping. MedlinePlus says to check with your provider about caffeine if you take stimulant medicines. Go light on energy drinks, cut back slowly, and call 911 for chest pain, shortness of breath, or fainting.

Does the Adderall label say anything about coffee?

No. The FDA prescribing information for Adderall does not list caffeine, coffee, or energy drinks as a drug interaction. The MedlinePlus page for dextroamphetamine and amphetamine does not mention them either. It says to continue your normal diet unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

That does not mean caffeine is a non-issue. The MedlinePlus caffeine page tells people to check with their health care provider if they take medicines including stimulants. Adderall is a central nervous system stimulant, so that advice applies to you.

Why can coffee and Adderall feel like too much together?

Caffeine stimulates your central nervous system, the same system Adderall works on. When you put the side effect lists next to each other, they look a lot alike.

None of our sources measures how much the 2 add up in one person. What they do show is that both push in the same direction. If you notice any of these after a coffee on a dose day, that is a sign to cut back and tell your prescriber.

  • Heart: the Adderall label lists palpitations, fast heart rate, and higher blood pressure. MedlinePlus and the FDA list a fast heartbeat for too much caffeine, and caffeine can raise blood pressure too.
  • Nerves: nervousness is a common Adderall side effect. Too much caffeine can cause restlessness, anxiety, and jitters.
  • Sleep: MedlinePlus says not to take Adderall late in the afternoon or evening because it can cause trouble falling or staying asleep. Caffeine can cause insomnia as well, and its effects can last 4 to 6 hours.
  • Other: headache, dizziness, and upset stomach can come from too much caffeine.

How much caffeine is OK on Adderall?

There is no Adderall-specific number in any source we checked. For healthy adults in general, the FDA says 400 mg of caffeine a day is not generally linked to harm, about 2 to 3 12-ounce cups of coffee. The FDA also says people vary widely in how sensitive they are, that some medicines can make people more sensitive to caffeine, and that if you are concerned about a medicine you should ask your provider whether you need to limit caffeine.

So treat 400 mg as a ceiling for the general public, not a target for you. A 12-ounce cup of brewed coffee can have anywhere from 113 to 247 mg, so 1 large cup can be more than you think.

The Adderall label notes that stimulants raise heart rate and blood pressure a little on average, and some people have larger increases. If you have high blood pressure or a heart condition, ask your prescriber about caffeine directly.

What about energy drinks and caffeine pills?

These can add up fast. The FDA says energy drinks can carry 54 to 328 mg of caffeine per 16 ounces, and MedlinePlus warns that energy drinks can be dangerous because of their large amounts of caffeine and that labels do not always give the true amount.

Over-the-counter wake-up pills such as NoDoz and Vivarin are caffeine too, as are some pre-workout supplements. The FDA warns that pure and highly concentrated caffeine products can have serious health consequences, including death: toxic effects such as seizures can happen with about 1,200 mg taken quickly, which is less than half a teaspoon of pure caffeine.

If you take Adderall, skip pure caffeine powders, avoid stacking energy drinks, and read labels on workout products. Mixing energy drinks with alcohol adds another problem, since MedlinePlus says caffeine can mask how drunk you are.

When should you get care?

In an emergency, call 911

Call your prescriber the same day if your heart races or pounds often, you feel very anxious or shaky, your blood pressure is higher than usual, or you cannot sleep after cutting back on caffeine.

Call 911 or go to the emergency room for chest pain, shortness of breath, or fainting. The Adderall Medication Guide says these signs of heart problems need care right away.

Call 911 for a seizure, confusion, hallucinations, severe agitation, a very high temperature, or a fast or irregular heartbeat that does not settle. These can be signs of an overdose of caffeine or of amphetamine.

How do you cut back on coffee without feeling awful?

The FDA says that if you are used to caffeine every day, it is best to cut back gradually. Stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal: headaches, drowsiness, irritability, nausea, and trouble focusing. MedlinePlus says these usually go away after a couple of days.

Do not use extra Adderall to cover withdrawal, and do not change your dose on your own. If you are drinking more coffee because your medicine seems to wear off early, tell your prescriber. That is a dosing question for them.

  • Cut back a little at a time instead of stopping all at once
  • Swap some cups for half-caf or decaf. The FDA says an 8-ounce cup of decaf has about 2 to 15 mg
  • Keep caffeine to the morning, since both caffeine and Adderall can keep you awake

Common questions

Can I drink coffee with Adderall?

The label does not rule it out, but keep it modest and check with your prescriber. The FDA label does not list caffeine as an interaction, yet both are stimulants with overlapping side effects like a fast heartbeat, nervousness, and poor sleep. MedlinePlus advises asking your provider about caffeine if you take stimulants.

Should I take Adderall and coffee at the same time?

No source we checked sets a timing rule for coffee and Adderall. What matters more is the total amount and how you feel. If you get jittery or your heart races, try less coffee or decaf on dose days and tell your prescriber.

Can I drink an energy drink on Adderall?

Keep them rare, and count them toward your daily caffeine total. The FDA says energy drinks can have up to 328 mg of caffeine per 16 ounces, and MedlinePlus says their labels do not always show the true amount. Skip pure caffeine powders, which the FDA warns can be toxic in small amounts.

Does coffee make Adderall work better?

None of our sources says it does. If you feel you need coffee to get through the day on your dose, that is worth telling your prescriber rather than adding more caffeine.

Is tea or soda OK instead of coffee?

They contain caffeine too, so they count toward your total. MedlinePlus lists certain teas, soft drinks, chocolate, and workout supplements as caffeine sources. Caffeine-free versions avoid it. Decaf cuts it way down but is not zero: the FDA says an 8-ounce cup of decaf coffee has about 2 to 15 mg.
