Melatonin is not listed as an interaction on the Adderall or Adderall XR labels, and the NHS list of medicines to check before taking melatonin does not include stimulants, so there is no known direct interaction. That is an absence of a warning, not proof the pair has been studied together. Trouble sleeping is one of the most common Adderall side effects, and the labels' advice is about timing: no late-afternoon or evening doses. If Adderall keeps you awake, tell your prescriber before you add a nightly supplement.
Is there an interaction between melatonin and Adderall?
We checked the current FDA labels for Adderall tablets and Adderall XR capsules on DailyMed. Neither mentions melatonin. The drugs the labels do warn about include MAOIs, serotonergic drugs like SSRIs, SNRIs, triptans, tramadol and St. John's wort, CYP2D6 inhibitors, stomach or urine acidifying and alkalinizing agents, and proton pump inhibitors.
The NHS page on taking melatonin with other medicines lists antidepressants like fluvoxamine, benzodiazepines, sleeping pills like zolpidem, opiates, blood pressure medicines, warfarin, some antibiotics and others. Stimulants and ADHD medicines are not on that list.
So no known interaction is listed. But no label says the pair is safe either, and we did not find a study that tested them together. Your pharmacist can check your full medicine list, which matters more if you take anything else, like an antidepressant.
Why does Adderall keep me awake?
Adderall is a stimulant, and sleep problems are a known side effect. In the Adderall XR clinical trials, insomnia was reported by 27% of adults on the drug versus 13% on placebo, 12% of teens versus 4%, and 17% of children aged 6 to 12 versus 2%.
MedlinePlus also lists trouble falling asleep or staying asleep as a sign of taking too much. If you have been taking extra doses, or taking it later to study, either one can cause trouble sleeping.
What does the Adderall label say about dose timing?
Timing is the first thing the label addresses, before any sleep aid.
- Adderall tablets (immediate release): first dose on waking, then 1 or 2 more doses 4 to 6 hours apart. The label says to avoid late evening doses because of insomnia.
- Adderall XR: take it on waking. The label says afternoon doses should be avoided because of the potential for insomnia.
- MedlinePlus: it should not be taken in the late afternoon or evening because it may cause difficulty falling or staying asleep.
- Do not move or add doses on your own. Changing when you take it, or which form you take, is a prescriber decision.
Is melatonin itself safe to take?
According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), short-term use of melatonin appears to be safe for most people, with mostly mild side effects like headache, dizziness, nausea and sleepiness. Long-term safety is not well known.
In the US, melatonin is sold as a dietary supplement, and the amount in the bottle may not match the label. NCCIH reports a 2023 study where 22 of 25 melatonin gummy products were mislabeled, with 74% to 347% of the listed amount. An older study found serotonin in 26% of products tested.
In the UK, the NHS uses melatonin as a prescription medicine, usually one 2 mg slow-release tablet 1 to 2 hours before bedtime, for no more than 13 weeks for short-term sleep problems in adults. US supplements are not regulated the same way, so ask a pharmacist which dose fits you.
When should you get care?
In an emergency, call 911Contact your prescriber the same day if you have gone several nights with little or no sleep, feel unusually wired, irritable or low, or notice numbness, color change or unexplained sores on your fingers or toes.
Call 911 for chest pain, shortness of breath or fainting, a seizure, hallucinations or confused thinking, or swelling of the face, tongue or throat or trouble breathing.
Call 911 if you take Adderall with an antidepressant or other serotonergic drug and develop agitation, fast heartbeat, high fever, stiff or twitching muscles, or confusion. These can be signs of serotonin syndrome.

If Adderall is making it hard to sleep, that is useful information for your prescriber, not just something to cover up. They may look at your dose, the timing, or the form you take.
- What time you take each dose, and whether you take it on weekends or only before exams.
- How long it takes you to fall asleep, and how many hours you get.
- Any supplements, energy drinks or other medicines, including melatonin.
- If you are taking Adderall that was not prescribed to you, say so. The label warns of a high risk of misuse and addiction, and sleep loss is one sign of taking too much.
Common questions
Can I take melatonin with Adderall?
There is no known direct interaction. Melatonin is not listed on the Adderall or Adderall XR labels, and stimulants are not on the NHS list of medicines to check with melatonin. That is not proof the combination has been studied, so check with a pharmacist, especially if you take other medicines. If Adderall keeps you awake, tell your prescriber, since dose timing is the first fix.
Will melatonin cancel out my Adderall?
We found nothing in the labels or NHS or NCCIH guidance saying melatonin blocks Adderall. The labels say to take Adderall on waking, which keeps your dose far from bedtime. If you feel groggy in the morning after melatonin, tell your prescriber or pharmacist.
What time should I take my last Adderall dose?
The Adderall XR label says to take it on waking and avoid afternoon doses. For immediate-release tablets, the label says the first dose goes on waking with 1 or 2 more doses 4 to 6 hours apart, and late evening doses should be avoided. Your prescriber sets your exact schedule, so do not shift it without asking.
Is it normal to have insomnia on Adderall?
It is common. In the Adderall XR trials, 27% of adults reported insomnia compared with 13% on placebo. It is still worth reporting, because your prescriber may be able to adjust the dose, timing or form.
Can I take melatonin every night with Adderall?
NCCIH says short-term melatonin use appears safe for most people, but long-term safety is not well known. The NHS limits prescription melatonin for short-term sleep problems in adults to 13 weeks at most. If you need help to sleep every night, that is a reason to talk to your prescriber about the Adderall itself.
