Yes - MRSA spreads through skin-to-skin contact and shared items like towels, razors, and sports gear, hitting contact sports and crowded settings hardest. Context: about one in three people carry staph harmlessly on skin or in the nose per the CDC; MRSA is simply the antibiotic-resistant strain. Most community cases are skin infections that respond to drainage plus the right antibiotic. While someone has an active infection: wounds covered, hands washed, no shared towels or razors.
What to do
- Keep wounds covered. Clean, dry bandages contain the drainage that spreads it.
- Share nothing personal. Towels, razors, and athletic gear stay separated.
- Do not squeeze the bump. The "spider bite" needs a provider to drain it - squeezing spreads it.
- Ask about decolonization for repeats. Recurrent household outbreaks have a protocol.
